The origins of the tiny fortified village of Vertine can be traced back to prior the year 1000 AD.

It is one of the most important and well-preserved examples of a fortified medieval village, with a high stone tower besides the main entrance and a Castle guarding the other side of the walls.

Within the village the original buildings are well preserved and follow the circular internal road.

Many painters from all over the world spend days in and around the village trying to capture its charm.
